Arina Speaks! is a 750-word picture book that features, as its heroine, a little girl with a big personality. The book is an exercise in critical reading for children, as it presents real conversations between Arina and her parents and asks children to describe Arina based on the conversation. The book is also a lesson in adjectives, since at the end, the reader learns that Arina is “CONFIDENT, HELPFUL, BOSSY, CLEVER, RIGHT (sometimes), PLUCKY, QUIRKY, WACKY, WHIMSICAL, HONEST, SILLY, CRAFTY, OPTIMISTIC, SUNNY, BOLD AND WILD.” Arina Speaks! combines elements of the Fisk family's favorite picture books, like Jane O’Connor’s Fancy Nancy (i.e. a strong child heroine and interest in building vocabulary); Bill Martin’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear or Polar Bear, Polar Bear (i.e. concluding pages that recap the previous ones); and Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are (i.e. a recognition and celebration of childhood angst and mishap). In addition, Arina Speaks! is a picture book for children that gives the child heroine voice, imbuing the story with authenticity that will resonate with both parents and early readers. From the author: Proceeds from the sale of this book will help fund an upcoming trip to Kazakhstan, so that Arina can meet her birth family. We're especially excited to meet and spend time with her Granny Valentina, who seems to share Arina's sense of humor. About the illustrator: Beverly Luria lives in South Florida. She has been drawing and painting most of her life. Graphic design and cartooning are her favorite art forms. Her work has appeared in the Florida Review magazine as well as in Stories for Children magazine. This is her second children’s picture book.
